Support Service

Volunteer Unit

Becoming a Volunteer

The Support Service Volunteer Unit Coordinators manage the admission of all volunteers applying for training in the program. The Unit has a limited number of positions available for the program. A waiting list is maintained for volunteers who are interested in the program.

When postions are available and a new training class  opens, candidates on the list are notified (a guardian is notified if the candidate is under 18 years of age) to meet with Unit Coordinators and schedule an interview and orientation.

When offered admission into the training program, the candidate must complete the formal application process. The volunteer application, insurance, and waiver documents will be completed by the applicant (and signed by a guardian if the candidate is under 18 years of age). The application packet will be reviewed and approved by the Volunteer Coordinators and Training Officer and then forwarded to the Volunteer Unit Commander for final processing prior to final approval and participation.

Upon final approval of the application, the Volunteer Training Unit will be notified and the candidate will be admitted for training requirements and completion dates.

The volunteer should understand that participation in the LAFD Support Service Volunteer Unit is considered to be voluntary. The LAFD Support Service Volunteer Unit reserves the right to discontinue a volunteer's participation in the program at any time that a valid basis for such discontinuation arises. Disciplinary issues and program discontinuations will be discussed with the volunteer (or his or her guardian if the volunteer is under 18 years of age), and with the Volunteer Unit Commander.

To become a Support Service Volunteer, start by completing the on-line application to be added to the waiting list.
